At the 2010 contest over 40,000 spectators attended the event, and an additional 1.677 million viewers watched it live on ESPN. A scorekeeper, or “Bunnette,” is paired with each contestant to keep count of the hot dogs consumed during the ten minute contest. Whoever consumes and keeps down the most hot dogs and buns (“HDBs”) will be declared the winner.

The International Federation of Competitive Eating, Inc. (IFOCE) and Major League Eating, govern all gastronomic sports and sanction the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Circuit, ensuring the contests are judged professionally and that safety standards are in place at each event. Last year, six-time former champion, Takeru Kobayashi, was taken away in handcuffs after he entered the police-barricaded spectator pen and got on stage once the eating had ended. Kobayashi had a contract dispute with Major League Eating and was barred from participating in the competition.

Of the contest Wayne Norbitz, President and COO of Nathan’s Famous, Inc. said, “I’m thrilled that Nathan’s Famous has become such an integral part of America’s July Fourth celebration. Through our qualifying circuit we are able to bring a bit of Coney Island to Nathan’s lovers around the country.”

Catch this year’s contest on ESPN and ESPN3.com, coverage begins at 10:00 am EST. Best of luck to all the contestants!
