November Is Diabetes Awareness Month

The ADA is a non-profit organization devoted to providing support to those who suffer from diabetes and finding a cure.

Diabetes is not a disease that is widely considered to be life threatening. Millions of Americans are “living with” diabetes. However, we have become too complacent about it and therefore underestimate the dangers of a disease that for a lot of people is totally preventable. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), someone is diagnosed with diabetes every seventeen seconds and diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined!

So what is diabetes exactly? Diabetes is characterized by high blood glucose levels in the blood stream which affects the body’s ability to produce  insulin, the hormone that helps your body break down sugar and other complex carbohydrates. When you can’t break down carbohydrates your body doesn’t get the nutrients it needs and instead of being digested, the carbohydrates stay in the body and clog up the blood stream resulting in severe health complications.

There are three types of diabetes:

Type 1 – formerly known as Juvenile Diabetes, occurs when someone is born without the ability to produce insulin.

Type 2 – is a condition that can be acquired as a result of poor diet and exercise. It is also the most common form of diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes – high blood glucose (sugar) levels in pregnant women, the cause is uncertain and effects 18% of pregnancies.

As with so many health problems, the treatment and/or prevention of diabetes begins with what you eat! Make smart choices when it comes to food, be committed to exercise, and make an effort to be informed about your own health status. The American Diabetes Association does a great job of providing information and resources to help those with this terrible disease, including helpful tips on dining out!

    What can I eat in a fast food restaurant that would be considered a diabetes smart meal? I imagine that the burgers and fries would need to be off the menu, as would sodas, even diet sodas can mess with your sugar levels, as well as ice cream and milk shakes. Oh well. Restaurant chains claim heart healthy meals b/c it has a chicken choice but it’s so difficult to eat out with all those sauces and cheeses on everything. The rice dishes or potatoes are all served with a fat warm creamy blanket. Banish me to the salad bar, torture me with oil and balsamic vinegar, no Ranch or Green Goddess.

      Fast food chains have made efforts to extend their menus to offer more healthy options, but our advice to anyone with diabetes would be to consult their doctor and websites like the American Diabetes Association’s (which is linked in our article ;-D.) Personally I think we all should be conscious of what we are eating and be educated about the effect that certain foods have on our bodies and our health! Food does more than just fill us up and taste good after all!
